Formerly the VHF Expeditionary Society, the Amateur Communications Society operated four amateur repeaters in Marin County, under the call sign WR6ACS, and later K6GWE. ACS had 150 plus members in 1977, Bay Area wide. ACS operated a VHF RTTY repeater for several years. ACS awarded the “Golden Alligator”, annually to a user who timed out the 90 second repeater timer (talked the repeater off-the-air), regularly. ACS incorporated in December 1974, and continued operating repeaters until the merger with the Marin Amateur Radio Club, Inc. in 2000. The merger created the current Marin Amateur Radio Society, which still operates repeaters in Marin County under K6GWE.
