Introduction to DMR – Digital Mobile Radio by Alan Bowker WA6DNR

Last night 6/5/20 we had an excellent presentation about DMR by Alan Bowker WA6DNR in our June membership meeting. Alan has graciously provided his slide deck which you can download at Alan’s DMR Slides  The presentation includes a description of the technology, a discussion of some of the radios that use DMR, How the radios are configured, information about local repeaters and some demonstrations.

My only regret is that I did not record it.

May Board Meeting

It has long been the practice of the board of the Marin Amateur Radio Society to encourage members to attend board meetings, and unless we are discussing sensitive issues our meetings are open. Since we are not currently meeting face-to-face the option to just show up is not available. We are meeting using zoom and I am extending an invitation to you. There seems to be an element of society who scrapes websites for on-line meeting credentials in order to disrupt on-line meetings, and for that reason I am not publishing the credentials here. If you would like to attend please send me an email at wa6uds@w6sg.net and I will email you the meeting credentials. As usual we will meet at 7:30 pm on Thursday 14 May.

Event Cancellations due to COVID-19 Shutdown

Hi All

The DDO regularly scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2020 aboard the USS Pampanito is cancelled because of the COVID-19 shutdown. Also, I received word from the Battleship New Jersey, NJ2BB, that this year’s “Museum Ships on the Air Special Event,” scheduled for this coming June, has also been cancelled. Maybe next year.

I hope all are well and stay so in the coming weeks and months while we wait for things to return to normal.

Social Distance 3/19/2020

The pace of changes in the face of COVID-19 is enough to make me dizzy. With the present Shelter in Place orders around the bay we are cancelling the 3 April 2020 General meeting. We are also cancelling the License Training class that would have started 7 April 2020. Since many of us have risk factors that mean we should be extra careful we are also cancelling the Sunday Morning “Bible” classes until further notice.

As hams we are community that likes to meet and talk. For now we need to do that in ways that don’t involve face to face group meetings unless they are essential. I do encourage you to reach out on the air and I urge you to check into the various nets around the area just to let us know you are ok.

Gatherings of people and COVID-19

The Marin Amateur Radio Society in interested in your health and safety in light of the COVID-19 or Novel Corona Virus. Current reports about the spread of this disease indicates that risk of infection at our meetings is very low. We have two meetings scheduled for this weekend. The general meeting on Friday 6 March and the Public Service Luncheon on Saturday 7 March. We do not intend to cancel either meeting but observing some degree of caution is a good idea. The specific reason for this email is the COVID-19 outbreak but the suggestions below apply to most of the common infectious diseases and are just good sense. Please note the following suggestions.
                1. If you think you have been in contact with someone who is infected with COVID-19 seek medical attention.
                2. If you feel unwell, particularly if you have a fever please stay home. Really, if you feel unwell please stay home.
                3. Direct physical contact is a prime method of transmitting the virus so avoiding hand shakes or hugs is a good idea and attempting either may make some people uncomfortable.
                4. If you have to cough or sneeze do so into a tissue or even better into your elbow to so there is no overspray.
                5. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. (Two times through the Happy Birthday song). Hand sanitizers are useful but not as effective as soap and water as they contain antibacterials and not antivirals.
                6. Feel free to wear a mask and or gloves.

For more information check out the Marin County Health and Human Services website at MarinHHS.org/Coronavirus

Thank you all for your assistance and I look forward to seeing you at our meetings.
